What Iowa asks you to record

30hours

of street or highway driving with a parent, guardian or instructor, before the licence application.

of those hours have to fall after sunset and before sunrise. The log keeps the two totals apart so you can see where you stand.

Every drive prints in the columns of the Iowa DOT form, in its order, ready to hand in. There is a CSV export as well.

Under Iowa Code 321.178A each session needs the date, the skills covered, start and finish times, the total time, whether it was day or night, and notes on deficiencies and improvements. This asks for all of them, and will not save a drive that is missing the skills or the notes.

How it works

  1. Add your student driver

    Their permit details and the hour targets. More than one is fine.

  2. Log each drive as you finish it

    Date, times and what you worked on. The drive time is worked out for you, including sessions that run past midnight, and you tag the skills from the Iowa parent guide rather than typing them out.

  3. Watch what is left

    Hours remaining, night hours remaining, and which skills from the guide you have not practised yet — so the next drive has a purpose.

  4. Print the log

    When the teaching is done, the record is already complete and formatted.

What this is not

Not a driver education course

Iowa requires an approved instruction provider, and this is not one. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Iowa DOT, and it does not replace any part of the teaching. It is the record-keeping side only, so that what you hand in at the end is accurate and complete.

Not somewhere your data gets used

Each family’s log is visible only to that family. There is no advertising, no analytics, and nothing is shared with anyone. You can delete your family and everything in it yourself, at any time, and it is gone for good rather than hidden.
